What’s in the Apprenticeship?

Most learning happens on the job, learning from experienced work colleagues. They’ll be some computer based learning in the classroom.

Apprentices learn all about computers and software packages.

They’ll learn how to set up, use and repair computers and things like a computer mouse and keyboard.

They’ll learn how to diagnose problems and how to fix them.

What’s required from an Apprentice:

Rathbone emphasises employment skills so Apprentices understand they need to be smart, well presented, punctual and to behave in a professional manner to get ahead.

They’ll need good communication skills to find out what problems are before they fix them.

Apprentices need to enjoy working with computers and be prepared to work hard to find solutions to problems.

They’ll need to work to deadlines and be reliable.

How long does an Apprenticeship last?

People must be able to perform the job to national standards so it depends on how fast someone learns.

If someone left school with no other experience in ICT, they could achieve their Apprenticeship in around 12 – 18 months or an Advanced Apprenticeship in between 18 – 24 months.

What qualifications can they achieve?

  • A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) proving they’re skilled.
  • A Technical Certificate that shows they have the knowledge they need.
  • Practical work skills in communications, using numbers and ICT.

Apprentices will also be provided with the employment skills to work in the sector and will understand employer rights and responsibilities.
