Silence proves golden

Rathbone Dewsbury resembled a library recently as trainees kept it quiet for charity.

Learners took part in a marathon five hour sponsored silence which included keeping the peace in centre and on a tour of Dewsbury – where locals tried to trick them into speaking!

Ironically, the aim of their quiet time was to raise funds for a loud and lively fashion show to be staged at the Eastborough Working Mens Club in December in aid of the British Heart Foundation and the Hollybank Trust. Although the community has been massively supportive, creating a catwalk has proved particularly costly – which is why the £560 raised should come in handy.

Visiting Hollybank (which cares for people with complex physical disabilities) convinced Rachel Armstrong to become involved in fundraising. “It’s certainly an experience going there and touring the classrooms” said the 17-year-old Childcare Apprentice.

As a star of school shows, fellow trainee Chantelle Kitchen is used to the spotlight – but even she is finding the prospect of modeling, dancing and singing at Eastborough daunting. Fellow trainee Kelly Oliver is also playing a major part on the night. Kelly, who has just completed a placement at the Shaw Cross Nursery, is motivated by making sure both young people and Dewsbury get a better image thanks to the show.

All the clothes being modeled at the event have been designed by the learners themselves and are made from recycled materials. Just to insure the night goes with a loud bang, local indie band The Sighting will be on view at the event – having offered their services free of charge.

Tickets for the ‘Beauty and the Best’ fashion show are priced at £4. Contact the Fashion Show Organisers for more details.
