Friend indeed to kids in need
Rathbone learners – and the young ones they look after – set the standard for caring during the BBC’s flagship charity campaign.
Centres all over the country organised everything from put a patch on Pudsey competitions to mouth watering cake sales to ensure they donated a large slice of cash to Children in Need.
Around 30 Entry to Employment students and childcare apprentices from Wakefield toddled along to Thornes Park (which is a mile from their new centre) accompanied by children aged 3-5. Dressed in banana yellow, the little ones came from the Toybox Nursery School. Based on Market Street, this private school provides placements for Rathbone Level 2 Childcare Apprentices such as Claire Goulthorp (pictured).

Over the Pennines at Ashton-under-Lyne, learners organised a fun-packed day of events including guessing the number of sweets in the jar and face painting. They even encouraged the local constabulary to take part in a Karaoke competition! Entry to Employment student David Smith (16) got dragged into dressing as woman by the female trainees at the centre. “It’s just a bit of fun” said David, “but it does help raise money for an important campaign.”
Pyjamas were at the centre of the party at Ashton and Wakefield – as indeed they were at Rathbone Huddersfield where Choices students wore night attire for a fundraising tour of the town centre. Tutor John Bell said: “It was great to see how the young people interacted so vibrantly with the public. The experience was a positive one for all involved.”
Bradford learners meanwhile made personal pledges to stop talking, swearing and smoking to light up their Children in Need day.
