With support from Rathbone Training a route to work in retail has opened up for 17-year-old Afia, from Oldham, through work experience at a leading high street store.

Afia successfully applied for three months of work experience with B&M stores in Oldham with support from Rathbone Training after she joined the youth training charity on a study programmes course to boost her English and Maths skills and give her the confidence to take the first steps into work.

“The work experience has given me hands on experience of helping customers with enquiries and arranging the stock in store. It has really helped to build up my confidence and communications skills,” said Afia.

“The skills and experience I’ve gained will demonstrate that I’m willing, committed and capable of carrying out a range of roles and the next step for me is to gain full-time employment working for a retailer.”

Afia has now progressed onto a level 2 course with Rathbone Training which will provide the perfect step into an apprenticeship or full-time work.
“The tutors and staff at Rathbone are so helpful and supportive and without their help I don’t think I’d have felt as confident and work ready in such a short space of time,” added Afia.
