Learners in Newport dig in at allotment project

Learners in Newport have been busy planting a range of vegetables as part of a community allotment project in partnership with Tesco in Newport.

The hard working team planted potatoes, onions, green beans, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers at the allotment which was renovated by Rathbone Training learners through a community project led by Tesco Newport.

Throughout the project Tesco has provided tools and seeds and staff from the store have come to support the project, providing lunch and getting stuck into tasks including painting sheds, digging and clearing the area for planting.

Rathbone Training Cymru is also part of Tesco’s food share scheme where donations of surplus food go to vulnerable people across the UK. The scheme has been a real success and Tesco Newport has even helped learners raise money to fund a freezer for their increasing number of food donations as well as educational trips to St Fagans National Museum of History and a Cardiff City Football Club stadium tour.
